Labor Day weekend the 96 Boys Red mixed it up with the top teams from the top clubs in N.C. "Choosing to participate in such a tournament as our season opener is important to us," said Coach Ross. "We need a benchmark to show where we are with regard to the top teams and clubs in the region, and were pleasantly surprised. The team won its group and advanced to the semis by beating North Mecklenburg Red 5-2 and Greensboro White 6-2.
Against Triangle United Gold, the 96 Red was able to maintain a 0-0 score at the end of the first half, with both teams having several scoring opportunities. Midway through the second half Triangle punched in two corners, and score a goal in the last minutes to post a 3-0 victory. Coach Ross’ synopsis of the game: "Triangle passed the ball to themselves and we passed the ball to Triangle. Our recent focus with these players has been on individual player skills. We have equal or more speed and quickness compared to teams we competed against. Now we will start adding tactical instruction to the equation and see what happens over the next several months."
Triangle went on to capture the championship by defeating SOCA Express 6-1 in the final match.
