Dateline: Wednesday October 10, 2012
Six Coast teams returned from Columbia SC with additions to their trophy shelves at this weekend’s Carolina Cup. Coast was well represented on the awards podium collecting three championships and three finalist trophies while competing against 230 teams from across the Southeastern United States. Coach Jennifer Stalvey’s 98 Flames and Coach Swavek Apanowicz’s 03 Red teams brought home top honors for the second consecutive tournament. The Flames won three matches and tied one on their way to winning the U14 top division while the 03 Red team dominated the top U9 group winning all four matches by a combined 21 to 5 goal differential. Coach Joel Banta’s 99 Red squad continued their winning ways in taking home the gold medal in the top U13 division easily outscoring their opponents in all four matches.
Two Coast teams collected their first hardware of the season when Coach MJ Hayek and Coach Justin Mueller’s teams advanced to their divisions championship matches. Coach Hayek’s 96 Black team posted three consecutive shutouts before falling in the final while Mueller’s 98 Red boys gutted out three consecutive one goal decisions before dropping the championship game. " The kids are starting to play well together and now that the tournaments are out of the way we can concentrate on our Challenge League schedule " said Coach Mueller. The 00 Red U12 boys added yet another accolade to their growing resume posting three victories over older teams in the second division of U13 before running up against a buzzsaw in the championship match. The 00 Red team is coached by Raphael Carr and Kevin McGovern.
" It was nice for me to have a chance to watch most of our teams compete in a well run event. The competition was very balanced and I feel our players benefitted from participating in the Carolina Cup " said Coast DOC Joel Banta.
