Dateline: Monday February 11, 2013
Coach Curtis Freeman’s Coast 99 Crush team overcame multiple injuries and stiff competition to capture top honors over the weekend in the McDonald’s Coast Winter Classic held at beautiful Grande Park in Market Commons. The Crush girls won a hard fought 3-2 decision over the Huntersville 99 Glaswegians in their opening match and had to defeat them for a second time in two days to win the championship of the U13 Gold Division. The Crush posted three wins and one tie with a goal differential of 9-3 for the tournament. Coach Freeman said " I was especially proud of the kids for overcoming the loss of several players prior to the tournament due to injuries. We had to have a few kids step up this weekend to win the tournament" Click for Image
Coast 99 Red and Coast 00 Red made it through to the championship match in the boys Gold Division at U12 and U13 before falling in their final matches. Coach Joel Banta’s 99 Red squad posted two wins and two losses during the tournament that included a very satisfying win over Discoveries of Rock Hill who had beaten them just last weekend in league play. The 00 Red boys coached by Kevin Mcgovern fought back from a 1-4 deficit and ended at 3-4 with several chances to force extra time at the end of their finals match and finished the event with two one goal losses to SCU/Mount Pleasant.
The McDonald’s Coast Winter Classic is one of two tournaments hosted by Coast FA each year and it created a $565,000.00 economic impact for the Grand Strand area. The Coast Spring Classic will be held April 27th & 28th at five venues across Horry and Georgetown Counties and is expecting 250-300 teams that will account for 1.9 million for our community.
