Four Coast Teams Strike Gold at Carolina Cup
Dateline: Monday October 7, 2013
Coast FA U08 Boys
Coast sent 19 of its select teams to Columbia SC over the weekend to participate in the Carolina Cup and returned to the Beach with four championships and two finalist trophies. " Our success this weekend is a testament to our parents diligence and dedication in bringing the kids out to training three times per week. Families have many options to choose from these days on where they want their children spending their leisure time. Our coaches are doing a fantastic job developing the players and giving them an opportunity to post some quality results " said Coast DOC Ross Morgan. "As a club we prefer to enter all of our teams in the highest level of competition that we feel is realistic for them to compete. When we bring home five first division and one second division medal in a tournament like the Carolina Cup it speaks volumes for the progress of our club.
The two U8 Coast boys teams (click for mage) stole the show this weekend by entering the top division and ran through their competition to set up an all Coast FA championship final. "We normally enter tournaments with an A team / B team format but we were asked to balance two equal teams for this particular event because we knew there was a possibility that they could end up facing one another in the finals" said Coach Aaron Miller. Both teams posted perfect 3-0-0 records along the way in one sided victories. The final was one for the ages ending in regular time plus two five minute extra time periods tied at 2-2. The Coast 05 Red team eventually won a PK shootout to claim the title. " It was a shame that either of our teams had to lose this match after their performance over the weekend " added Coach Jimmy Dean.
Coast 04 Red (click for image) claimed top honors in the first division of U9 boys avenging a loss to a very good Discoveries team in the qualifying round. " Our kids grew up a little this weekend after losing our first match. They showed a lot of poise and did not panic while posting two straight victories to make it into the championship" said Coach Luis Brenes. Once there the 04 Red boys won a hard fought back and forth match 5-4 to claim the gold medal.
Coach Swavek Apanowicz Coast 03 Red (click for image) boys found some strong competition from SSA Savannah United in two of their four consecutive victories on their way to winning the U10 boys first division. The team scored an impressive 19 total goals over four matches. Running into a tough team like SSA will help the boys as they prepare to elevate their competition in December’s Norcross Nike Cup. The victory by the 03 boys completed a Coast FA sweep of the first division boys U8, U9 and U10.
The ladies from Coast also made their way to the winners circle at second division U13 girls. Coach Madi Owens Coast 00 Crush Too (click for image) girls rode a very stingy defense and mustered just enough goals to post four straight narrow victories. The girls only allowed an amazing one goal the entire tournament and that came against a team from perennial powerhouse Top Hat Soccer Club. "Half of my team are actually U12 players that are playing up one age group. The team wanted this medal and played with great determination and resolve all weekend " said Coach Owens.
As usual Coach Jennifer Stalvey’s 98 Flames made their way into the first division U15 championship but this time came up shy and had to settle for a finalist trophy. The team was solid all four matches and only allowed three total goals but unfortunately gave up two of them in the finals.
