The Coast 02 Red team won the championship in the top flight of the U-9 division while going undefeated in this weekend’s Boys Rule Tournament in Savannah GA. The team scored a whopping 36 goals while allowing only 4 in Coach Pat Piscatelli’s debut as coach of our U-9 team. Great start to the season !

Our boys U-15 Challenge team at Coast FA qualified to play in the Region III Premier League next Fall in dramatric fashion at their State Cup Tournament held in Greenville South Carolina over the weekend.

Coast 96 Red started the tournament with a double overtime 1-0 win against SCUFC Palmetto in Columbia SC. The match ended 0-0 and was sent to PK’s where the boys prevailed 3-1. The semi finals opponent was Cesa 96 Premier ranked #9 in the country and the match was played on their home field in Greenville SC. After the match ended in regulation tied 2-2 the team completed a 20 minuite double overtime with no additional scoring. The match then went to PK’s where we came out on top 3-2 to send us to the State Championship against SCU/Mount Pleasant. We were forced to play the championship with only 11 players due to multiple injuries and came up short 1-4 versus a very talented Mount Pleasant team.

The team will now compete in the Region III Premier League next Fall against the State Cup champions and finalist from North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. The Coast 96 Red team is one of only two squads from the Myrtle Beach area to ever achieve Premier League status with the other being the OSSOC 88 boys team.

Coach Joel Banta says, " the boys achievement is a direct reflection of their hardwork this season and in prior years. The parents and players have been dedicated to traveling and playing at a high level for numerous years and it has finally gotten this group to the next level. It will be a challenge playing in the premier league next fall but with proper preparation and dedication this group can have tremendous success! I am fortunate to have had a chance to experience this moment as a coach and hope the team can become stronger with this new opportunity".

The South Carolina Olympic Development Program or ODP, is the start of the identification process for the National and Olympic Teams. The South Carolina Youth Soccer Association conducts the program for US Soccer under the jurisdiction of the US Olympic Committee. The purpose of this prestigious program is to identify players on the basis of open tryouts and develop them to represent their state, region, and the United States in soccer competition.

At the state combine the players who will make up the South Carolina ODP State teams are selected. Those teams, made up of 18 players, then go and participate in the Region III ODP camp, which includes trainings and a tournament of the state teams. From this camp players can be selected as Regional Pool Players and are provided with the opportunities to represent the region in international (overseas trips) and National events. At the National events players are seen by National staff coaches and are eligible for National team selection.

This summer Amar and Zach Elsibai represented Myrtle Beach in the Track & Field Regionals held in Hoschton, GA.  Amar made it to the Reionals in the shot-put.  Zach made it in the 100 and 200 meter dash, and the long jump.  Zach advanced to the US National Junior Olympics Finals in Wichita KS where he placed 6th in the nation in long jump competition.

Region III teams consist of the top Olympic Development players from Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. Players chosen for regional teams must first be rostered on their State ODP teams. They then represent their respective state at Regional Camps where they are put through vigorous training sessions and have the opportunity to compete against other states. During state vs. state play, the players are scouted by regional staff who invite a select group to play in regional pool games where the staff can see the best players of the day mix it up. At the end of the week a Region III team is named for the following age groups Boys 1998, 1997, 1996, 1995 and 1994 and Girls 1997, 1996, 1995 and 1994. Regional teams, depending on the age groups, play around the US as well as internationally.

The Coast 96 Boys finished their 2010 Spring and Fall seasons 18-1-6 while competiting in the SCYSA Challenge League.  The boys lost their only match in the semifinals of the State Cup last May.  The 96 boys are coached by Joel Banta.  Coach Joel says, "What is remarkable about this team is that we draw from such a small pool of players compaired to the bigger clubs in the state.  This group has been committed to Coast FA since it's formation when the boys were 9 years old.  The development of these players is a direct reflection of previous quality coaching and sacrifice from the parents, who continue to support their player's love for playing the game.  I happen to have been the lucky one chosen to get the opportunity to help these boys along the way."

The SCYSA State Select Team program is the start of the selection process for South Carolina players particapate in  the USYS Olympic Development Program (ODP).  The US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program was formed in 1977 to identify a pool of players in each age group from which a National Team will be selected for international competition; to provide high-level training to benefit and enhance the development of players at all levels; and, through the use of carefully selected and licensed coaches, develop a mechanism for the exchange of ideas and curriculum to improve all levels of coaching.  For more information click here.

Coach Pat Piscitelli was inducted into the Mars Hill College Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday, November 7.  Coach Pat was a member of the men’s soccer team from 1995-98.  Coach Pat was a member of the 1997 SAC Tournament team and the 1998 SAC regular season and SAC Tournament Championship squad. He was a first team All-SAC selection in 1998, a 1998 All-South Region selection and team captain of the 1997 and 1998 All-SAC Tournament team. During the 1998 championship campaign, Coach Pat led the SAC in wins, shutouts, lowest goal allowed average and minutes played. At the time of graduation Piscitelli held school records for most shutouts in a season (7), fewest goals allowed in a season (29) best goals allowed average in a season (1.04) and in a career (1.83). After graduation,  Coach Pat played one professional season with the South Carolina Shamrocks.

Coach Pat , along with two former student-athletes join 81 existing members of the Mars Hill Athletics’ Hall of Fame.

The 91 Boys Waves team closed out its club final season and club career November 15th at the 2009 Savannah College Showcase winning all 4 games  and  being crowned Tournament champs.  In four games, only 2 goals were allowed for the entire weekend againest all Georgia teams.  Match results were 4-1, 1-0, 3-1,  1-0.

The Coast 00 Boys Red captured top honors in the U10 Silver Division of the Great Carolina Shootout.  The under 9 team roster for the tournament included 7, 8 and 9 year olds enrolled in Coast FA’s Player Development Program (PDC).

Cole Gulledge, Conor Sloan and Jon Yarbrough traveled to Laurel, Mississippi last month to show their skills is baseball.  The surfside based team with a roster of 12 players clinched the Dixie Youth AAA World Series title with only 2 defeats in 24 starts.

Her playing career includes ten years of New Jersey club soccer and four years of varsity soccer at Haddonfield High, where she was selected all conference for three years and All State her senior year.  At the collegiate level, Beth played four years of Division I Soccer at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), team captain her junior and senior year, led her team to Big South Tournament and North East Conference Tournament finals for two consecutive years and selected to the Academic All Conference Team all four years of year collegiate career.  She concluded her playing career as a professional player for the Oklahoma Outrage in the summer of 2000.

The 98 Boys Red opened their fall season with a solid performance in Charlotte at the Lake Norman Kickoff hosted by North Meck Soccer Club.  The boys advanced to the finals of the U11 Elite Division on Sunday .  Regulation time in the final match ended with a 1-1 draw.  The boys were up 1-0, but drew a penal foul in the penalty area,  and North Meck 98 Red converted the PK as the equalizer.  The winner was determined by a shootout instead of PKs.  The boys were unable to sucessfully convert in the shootout but secured Runner-up honors as one of the finalists.  

Schedule and Results   

For 2009 the Hammerheads Youth Academy will consist of three teams, U13, U15 and U17 boys.  Girls teams will be addressed next year.  The boys program will be summer/holiday league and tournament competition that will coexist with each of the player’s respective club programs.

The consensus is that the level of excellence produced by Youth Academy teams will be directly related to the quality of the feeder system, the development structure within the recreational player base of the affiliated youth soccer organizations.  To ensure a sound foundation of player excellence, the individual youth clubs are making plans to link their PDC programs by scheduling formal interclub league competition, hopefully starting in the fall of 2009.  For our PDC parents and players, it will mean less travel for quality competition outside of our In-house league schedule.   

We are excited about the relationship we have developed with regard to our Wilmington and Jacksonville friends.  We look forward to the opportunities the Hammerheads Youth Academy will provide for our participants.
