Coach Jennifer Stalvey's Coast 98g Flames struck gold by winning the SCYSA PMSL Classic I State Cup title this weekend in Columbia South Carolina. The girls battled their opponents as well as stormy weather conditions along the way. The girls enjoyed a tremendous Spring season finishing on the top of the table with a 10 win, 0 loss and 2 tie regular season record while scoring 36 goals and allowing only 8. The regular season success earned the girls a number one seed in the eight team PMSL Classic I Tournament in Columbia.

The Flames handled their first two opponents on Saturday easily winning 3-0 over Rock Hill based DSC 98 Lady Green and Greenville based CESA 98G Select. The girls rode their Saturday success into Sunday's semi final match against Columbia SCUFC 98G Palmetto and came away with a hard fought 3-1 victory against a team playing on their home field.

Sunday's State Championship was now set to feature the Flames versus a Greenville based Furman United team that the Flames played to a 1-1 tie during the regular season. The championship match lived up to its name with the momentum swinging back and forth between both sides until Coast wrestled away the State Championship final with a 2-1 victory.

By winning the state title the Flames season will be extended to play in the USYS Southern Regionals in Decature Alabama on June 6th against the state champs from the other 12 Southern states. The winner of that event will represent Region III for the Classic I Division National Championship. Well done girls !

The 5th annual Coast Spring Classic wrapped up over the weekend under pristine conditions at Coastal Carolina University, Socastee Park, Stables Park and Grande Park at the Market Commons. The event drew 232 teams from Georgia, Virginia and the Carolinas and pumped in an estimated 1.6 million dollars into the Grand Strand area. City of Myrtle Beach spokesman Mark Kruea was quoted in Sunday’s edition of the Sun News " If you look in the dictionary this is what you would see under sports tourism."

Coast FA teams captured four of the thirty six division championships up for grabs at the tournament. Coach Ben Schoen’s Coast 02 Black U10 boys team went to the winners circle first by avenging an earlier loss to Fort Mill SC based Palmetto United with a 2-1 decision in the championship match. The team posted three wins and one loss over the weekend and Coach Schoen was ecstatic. " This is a great way to end the Spring season and I hope it will serve as a motivational tool for the boys to work on their games this Summer." Click for Image

Coach Donnie Price’s Coast 02 Red U10 boys have made a habit of winning tournaments of late winning the State Cup two weeks ago in Columbia and now bringing home top honors at the Spring Classic. The boys posted four straight wins and Coach Price said " winning your home tournament is always special because more family members and friends are able to share the moment with the players. We are looking forward to moving to the larger field and an 8v8 format this Fall." Click for Image

The Coast 01g Red U11 girls team coached by Stepheney Gerhardt also posted a perfect four wins and no loss weekend on their way to the championship. "The girls really played well all weekend and gutted out a 1-0 decision in the final. These kids have progressed so much this year and I think winning this event will inspire the girls to work hard this off season" added Coach Gerhardt. Click for Image

Coach Madi Owens Coast 00g Red U12 team has been playing up a year to U13 all season so when the opportunity arose to play in their own age group at home the girls jumped at the chance.
Two Coast FA teams were crowned state champions over the weekend at the SCYSA Khols Academy State Cup in Sumter SC. Coast captured the U9 Boys and U10 Boys state titles in the most difficult division offered at this year’s event. " I witnessed some tremendous play over the weekend while watching ten of our boys and girls teams compete for the coveted title" said Coast Director Heyward Gulledge. Coach Donnie Price’s Coast 02 Boys claimed their title in dramatic fashion with a double overtime 3-2 victory against Charleston based NASA Soccer Club. The boys finished with a perfect 4-0 record that included a last minute victory against SCUFC in the semifinals. Coach Price said afterwards " My teams have won 40+ tournaments over the years but this is my first State Championship. I could not be more proud of my boys."

Coach Swavek Apanowicz’s Coast 03 Red were also crowned state champs in convincing fashion with four consecutive wins with a combined 15 goals scored while allowing 5 over four matches. The boys won the final 2-0 against what is becoming one of their biggest rivals in Discoveries Soccer Club from Rock Hill. "This group of kids has had a ton of success against very good competition this year.
Coast FA and the Myrtle Beach Mutiny have taken several steps over the last few months to deepen their relationship. Mutiny team owner Trym Hogner has hired Coast Directors of Coaching, Joel Banta and Ross Morgan to lead the squad in their second season of NPSL League play. Pat Piscitelli was named Sporting Director for the club and will also serve as the goalkeeper coach." It took me a year or so to learn the lay of the land for soccer in Myrtle Beach and hiring DOCs from an established youth soccer club will add stability and professionalism in year two for the Mutiny" said Hogner, a native Norwegian. "The coaches have finished tryouts and have assembled our First Team roster at this point and we are excited to add a Reserve Team this year. The tryouts for the Reserve Team are April 20th and we hope to have many current and former Coast players attend" added Hogner.

The Mutiny home matches will be played at massive Doug Shaw Stadium and the recently completed Ashley Booth Field. The recent installation of next generation field turf at Ashley Booth coupled with the closer seating areas for the fans will provide an exciting atmosphere for the matches." We are in hopes that the entire Coast family gets behind the Mutiny this year by coming out to the games. Our relationship with the Mutiny will add another level of soccer for our community" said Banta. Sharing a coaching staff between Coast and the Mutiny certainly has its advantages and should help galvanize the Strand's soccer community as a whole. Coast offers two Rec Leagues starting at U4, select teams from U8 - U18 and is home to the GSS Grand Strand Soccer League for adult play." Strengthening our relationship with a Pro club is a natural progression in our vision of offering cradle to the grave soccer options for our community. It also creates an avenue for our high level players to potentially extend their careers. Helping the Mutiny be successful will benefit everyone involved in soccer at the beach" said Morgan.

Coast registered nine teams in the St.Patty Tournament over the weekend in Columbia SC and six returned to the beach with hardware." This is a large tournament with nearly 300 teams from across the Southeast and for a club the size of ours to have six teams place is phenomenal . This is a true testament to our players and parents commitment to the program. All of those nights where our kids turned up to training when it would have been easy to stay home are paying huge dividends for our teams" said Coast DOC Ross Morgan.

Coach Curtis Freeman's 99 Crush girls and Coach Swavek Apanowicz's 03 Red boys were crowned champions in their respective divisions. Finalist trophies were presented to our 98 Flames, 02G Red girls, 02 Red boys and 01 Red boys teams. The nine Coast teams posted a combined record of 22 wins, 8 loses and 3 ties for the tournament against teams from throughout the Southeastern US.

"This tournament is very well established and allows us to face some clubs that we normally do not have an opportunity to compete against. It serves us well as we prepare for our State Cup competition next month " said Coast DOC Joel Banta.

Zimmer & Gazzani named player of the week

Co-Athletes of the Week: Gazzani, Zimmer hit goals!!

For the first time in Mammy’s Kitchen Athlete of the Week voting history, we have a tie. But what do you expect in a race between two soccer standouts – a sport known for draws? Just not by the score of 3,883-all. That was the final vote tallies for Carolina Forest senior Erica Gazzani and St. James sophomore Keaton Zimmer, whose unique backgrounds in soccer show just how far the sport has come on the Grand Strand in recent years.

Gazzani transferred to Carolina Forest as a seventh-grader from New York, where she grew up playing in advanced developmental leagues. She joined Coast FA and played two years up in age to get a higher level of training, and after her elder teammates moved on Gazzani and her parents traveled twice a week to Mount Pleasant for practices.

“I started playing soccer when I was 4 and I’ve always loved it,” Gazzani said. “It was a tough transition moving here. Soccer isn’t as big here as it was in New York so I had to travel a lot to find the level of competition I was used to playing against, but it was a good experience and I made a lot of friends from all over the state.”

Zimmer, on the other hand, grew up on the Grand Strand and also started playing at the age of 4. In the seventh grade, he gave up baseball to concentrate solely on soccer, joining the Coast FA 96 Premiere team and competing in tournaments throughout the Southeast. He and many of his club teammates are now up-and-comers for the Sharks.

“I remember I started playing on a field behind the middle school before there was Coast FA,” Zimmer recalled. “A lot of the guys that are on the high school team now started playing Coast FA a few years later. We’ve been playing together for a long time, probably eight or nine years now, and it’s starting to pay off in high school.”

During Gazzani and Zimmer’s short careers, the Grand Strand has undergone a serious transformation in the sport of soccer. A decade ago there were only small recreation leagues spread out through the Strand and a small club squad that had a difficult time competing against state soccer hubs like Charleston, Columbia and Greenville.

Now Coast FA has consolidated many of the smaller rec leagues and become a force in regional club tournaments. The result has been a boon for local players looking to take their games to a higher level, and a growing soccer scene in numbers and repuation.

“Our Coast FA team finished second in the State Cup last year and then finished second in the Atlanta Cup, which has all the best teams from around the Southeast,” Zimmer said. “A lot of those same guys are on our high school team and we really have a lot of chemistry. There’s been a big jump in intensity and that’s a big advantage.”

Although Gazzani arrived on the Grand Strand too late to reap the full benefits of a emerging soccer program, her dedication and participation in local and statewide club programs, including the Olympic Developmental Program in Columbia, have resulted in an ability to lead her high school team and a scholarship to Charleston Southern.

“In my four years at Caroline Forest I’ve never had a college coach come watch one of my games, but I’ve played in some club tournaments where there were like 40 college coaches watching,” Gazzani said. “It took a lot of travel and I thank my parents for it because it took a lot of time and money, but it was definitely worth it.”

The vote may have been a tie, but both soccer players are winners. And so is the local soccer community.

The Fall 2012 McDonald’s Rec League ended this weekend under perfect weather conditions, great food from Hanser House Restaurant and plenty of exciting soccer . Three hundred local kids competed for championships in U4 through U12 divisions at Socastee Park under the guidance of devoted volunteer parent coaches. "The parents that step up to coach their son or daughter’s rec team are the backbone of our program " said Coast DOC Ross Morgan. All of the kids walked away winners with a very cool individual trophy for their nightstand and memories that will carry them through the winter. Coast DOC Joel Banta added " I spend most of my time traveling with our older select teams so it was really fun being home for the rec tournament to see how the younger kids have progressed.

Two Myrtle Beach based Coast FA boys teams entered the 34th annual Atlanta Cup and came away with very impressive results over the Labor Day Weekend. The Atlanta Cup is the largest youth soccer tournament in the Southeastern United States and this year hosted over 650 teams from all over the country.

The Coast 96 Red boys team finished second in U16 Cup Division, which is the most difficult level of play offered. Coach Joel Banta’s squad returned to Atlanta for the fourth consecutive year and posted three victories and one tie before dropping the championship match 4-2 in their group of twelve teams to NASA Elite from Atlanta. Along the way Coast 96 Red defeated the only two clubs ranked ahead of them in South Carolina and a top team from Georgia in Alianza Elite. This weekends results lifted the boys to the #38 position in the national poll and prepares them for their brutal R3PLE schedule that lies ahead. Coach Banta added "the boys took the next step in their journey to compete at the elite Southeast region level.

The Coast 97 Red team enjoyed their first trip to Atlanta by coming within one goal of taking home top honors in the U15 A Division. The boys were exceptional all weekend and certainly played well enough to win the championship posting three wins and one tie before falling to hometown powerhouse Atlanta Fire 1-0. The wins came against some of the top clubs in Georgia and were obtained in decisive fashion allowing only three goals over the course of five matches. The results are super impressive due to this being their first matches of the season and several players are new to the team."The Atlanta results puts the team in a good position as they prepare for other elite events such as the CASL Showcase in November" said Coast DOC Ross Morgan."This team is now ready to step up to the next level". Coach China Maja added "the team played extremely hard all weekend and showed great resiliency. They worked for one another and I am pleased with each and every one of the boys."

Coast 97 Red

Coast 96 Red

Things are going to look much different when training resumes at Socastee Park in mid-august. Over the summer break we have added a U10, U11, U12, U13 and a second U16 team of girls. Things started to happen when Coach Pat Piscitelli was able to add a second team of U16 girls to the club. Coach Piscitelli then landed the Myrtle Beach Varsity Girls coach, MJ Hajek, to lead this team. “Playing the fall and spring seasons will help the girls develop and ultimately benefit the area high school programs” said Coach Piscitelli.

When Coach Curtis Freeman decided to return to Coast, many of the players he has worked with the past several years chose to follow. Coach Freeman will be the head coach of the U13 girl’s teams. “This group of girls has paid their dues over the last few years at training AND has had success in tournaments as well. I look forward to them playing full sided soccer this fall at Coast” stated Coach Freeman.

Jennifer Stalvey’s 98 Flames team also benefitted from the summer influx of girls bolstering her roster to 17 and adding 4 training players. Coach Stalvey states “Having increased roster numbers will help us tremendously during league matches and tournaments, as well as, making training sessions much more competitive.”

The younger girls were the biggest winners from the summer growth. We will field both a U10 and a U11 team in the Coastal Development League based in Charleston this Fall. Coaches Stepheney Gerhardt and Donna Anderson have teamed up to provide training at Socastee Park and Pawleys Island, to reduce the amount of travel required for the girls. “Coach Anderson and I are so excited about girls’ soccer at Coast and feel that once training begins, the number of young girls wanting to be involved will explode” said Coach Gerhardt.

Co-director of coaching Joel Banta summed things up by saying “We have the organization, facilities, and quality coaching staff in place to really grow girls’ soccer, at the beach. It should be a fun season for everyone involved, the sky is the limit.”

Cole Gulledge and Conor Sloan have played soccer together for as long as either of them can remember and now they have a chance to play for all of the marbles. When the boys are not playing on their Coast 96 Red Premier team for Coach Joel Banta, they are members of the SCUFC Battery U-14 Developement Academy squad. The Battery team is comprised of top players from across our state that compete in the Southeast Pre Academy League against some of the largest clubs in Florida, Georgia, Virginia , North Carolina and South Carolina. After finishing third out of thirteen teams in the regular season with a 9-2-2 record, the Battery won the Southeast Memorial Day Tournament with three consecutive wins over Charlotte Soccer Academy, CASL and Miami’s Kendall Soccer to qualify as one of eight teams to play for the national title in July at the National Premier League Champions Cup held in Chicago Illinois. The seven other teams will be champions from the Midwest , Northern California , Southern California , Texas, Northeast , Pacific Northwest and Northern Illinois. "Congratulations to Conor and Cole on making such a large impact on the SCUFC Academy team. To win a regional tournament and go on to play for a national championship is something that very few players get to experience. The Coast 00 Black team was equally impressive on their way to the crown posting a 4-0-0 record as well. The Coast 00 Black team only allowed 3 goals in four matches while scoring 14 and capped off the championship with a hard fought 2-1 victory over a very talented Sumter club. "The future certainly looks bright for this age group at our club" said DOC Ross Morgan. The match ended 0-0 and was sent to PK’s where the boys prevailed 3-1. The semi finals opponent was Cesa 96 Premier ranked #9 in the country and the match was played on their home field in Greenville SC. After the match ended in regulation tied 2-2 the team completed a 20 minuite double overtime with no additional scoring. The match then went to PK’s where we came out on top 3-2 to send us to the State Championship against SCU/Mount Pleasant. We were forced to play the championship with only 11 players due to multiple injuries and came up short 1-4 versus a very talented Mount Pleasant team.

The team will now compete in the Region III Premier League next Fall against the State Cup champions and finalist from North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. The Coast 96 Red team is one of only two squads from the Myrtle Beach area to ever achieve Premier League status with the other being the OSSOC 88 boys team.

Coach Joel Banta says, " the boys achievement is a direct reflection of their hardwork this season and in prior years. The parents and players have been dedicated to traveling and playing at a high level for numerous years and it has finally gotten this group to the next level. It will be a challenge playing in the premier league next fall but with proper preparation and dedication this group can have tremendous success!
