Coast Teams Successful in Chapel Hill

Eleven Coast FA teams battled the heat plus two hundred twenty five teams from top North Carolina clubs in Chapel Hill over the weekend. Five Coast teams returned home with tournament hardware, two championships and three finalist trophies. The Triangle United Classic Cup annually marks the end of our preseason and the start of SCYSA league play.

Coach Mario Benjamin’s Coast 08g Red girls (Click for Image) set the bar high with a 4-0 win in their first match versus NCF Fusion and never looked back. The girls allowed just one goal in four matches to win a 1-0 thriller versus home side TUSA Gold in the championship. “ Getting a win in our first match gave the girls confidence that they used to carry them forward throughout the entire tournament. We just continued to find a way to get it done and eventually got a result over a very good TUSA Gold team to come home as champions. I am proud of the achievements but even more proud of the way the team came together and created a sisterhood ” said Coach Benjamin.

The Coast 10 Red (Click for Imagecoached by RJ Bass won both of their preseason tournaments playing up an age group. The 10 Red also rode a stout defensive effort all weekend allowing only two goals in four matches. The final was a terrific match versus the TUSA Pre NPL squad where we captured a hard fought 2-1 result to claim the championship. “ It was a true team effort for us this weekend with eight different players registering goals. We feel ready to begin our league play which will also be against teams that are one year older. I am excited to see what we can achieve this year ” said Coach Bass.

Coast 11 Black (Click for Image) Coach Dimitri Leftis got a valiant effort from his team but came up just short in the finals at U11. The 11 Black posted an impressive eleven goals scored versus two goals conceded for the weekend enroute to their second place finish. The championship was a highly competitive match versus Wake FC that saw the boys in it until the end. “ The kids were awesome this weekend. We had players in multiple positions plus three guest players from other Coast teams that did a terrific job for us. They fought until the very end and I am really proud of this team ” said Coach Leftis.

Coach Steef De Lange’s Coast 08 Red (Click for Imageteam overcame a first round defeat and then reeled off three consecutive wins. The boys finished as finalists for the tournament after righting the ship with three dominant results. Coach De Lange said “ Everything we worked on last season came together during this tournament. After a false start we went on to win out using great passing patterns to penetrate the opponent’s defense. I am extremely proud of how the boys played and their resiliency after a slow start.”

Coach Nicole Griffith’s Coast 13 Red (Click for Imageboys posted a 2-1-1 record on their way to a second place finish which included a 0-1 loss to Burlington Soccer Club in the final. “ The boys played awesome this weekend in very difficult conditions. We used this weekend to try players in new positions and also shared the goal keeping duties. We have improved tremendously since the start of the season and despite the result in the final match the kids showed a lot of heart and fight ” said Coach Griffith.
